Lights, Crowds, Action! Inside SMU Patron’s Day 2026

From cheerleading showdowns to a headliner performance by Shazza, Patron's Day 2026 proved that SMU's birthday celebrations only get bigger each year. What went down on the big day? Writer Shashwat takes you through the highs and highlights of Patron's Day 2026, one timestamp at a time.

Commonly known as SMU’s birthday, Patron’s Day represents a major milestone at the start of each year, celebrating the vibrant student life on campus. This year, the expectations were set even higher, with boundless possibilities being the theme of Patron’s Day 2026. So how did it go down on the big day itself? Our correspondent sets out to investigate.

3:30pm – The festivities begin, with the post-class Friday rush already spilling onto Campus Green. As the crowd built up, the students gravitated towards the latest addition to Patron’s Day: the cheerleading squads. In the leadup to the Tug of War, each school had nominated its premier performers to garner support from the crowd. The atmosphere was electric, as the cheerleaders led the way with school banners and dance routines crafted meticulously to the Billboard Top 100 hits.

4:05pm – After significant buildup from the captivating performances, the crowd was more than ready for (tug of) war. And the team introductions did not disappoint – the squads strode out amid rousing cheers, despite the light drizzle which persisted all afternoon.

After a tensely contested final, egged on by teammates and with all eyes on them, the School of Economics eventually emerged victorious over the School of Computing and Information Systems. Their exultant faces said it all – their climactic victory and bragging rights had been secured for a year till Patron’s Day 2027 rolled around.

6:00pm – As the sun began to set, the crowd started spreading outwards once more, towards the twin arms of the Food Village and the Maker’s Booths. Armed with free popcorn from the food stalls, I chose to survey the booths instead, run by SMU alumni only too happy to return to celebrate their alma mater.

This year, the booths had significant variety, including Syncrochet and their charming array of (named!) ducks; bouquets of knit roses which had me fooled from a distance; and Fogofungi, run by alumni who seek to grow the ‘finest mushrooms in all of Singapore’ and were offering kits of their own. Meeting dignitaries, led by the honourable President Tharman Shanmugaratnam, to showcase their best was the cherry on top.

7:00pm – The lights flickered on and attention was drawn back to the stage with an extended run by SMU SoundFoundry. All the late-night rehearsals and practices had clearly paid off, with the band ending on a high note with ‘Unwritten’ by Natasha Bedingfield. Up next were Funk Movement and Samba Masala, who kept the crowd pumped with electrifying performances as the night raged on.

9:00pm – Finally, after multiple rounds of performances and stage games alike, it was time for headliner Shazza to take the stage. As a local artist with a diverse music style exploring themes of identity and breaking through, her performance perfectly encapsulated the theme of infinite possibilities. Highlights included her hit song ‘Medieval’ from her latest album as well as a rousing chorus of ‘Viva La Vida’ which sprung people on their feet, thronging the stage.

Despite the looming threat of rain, delays or any number of challenges that could derail an event of this scale, participants and facilitators alike had pulled off a spectacular Patron’s Day (the free Milo stand definitely had a part to play).

From the Tug of War to the stage and beyond, I saw students, performers and organizers bringing their irrepressible spirit and celebrating all things SMU. Though it was time to leave, I found myself thinking that next year couldn’t come fast enough. See you at Patron’s Day 2027!
